Limits to Confidentiality in Counselling

We prioritize your privacy in counselling. Information shared during sessions is confidential and will not be disclosed without your written consent. However, Ontario law and professional ethics require therapist to share information in the following circumstances:

1. **Imminent Risk**: If you are at risk of harming yourself or others, your therapist is obligated to take protective action by informing appropriate authorities.

2. **Child or Elder Abuse**: Any disclosure of child or elder abuse must be reported to the relevant authorities.

3. **Assault or Abuse by a Professional**: If you disclose information regarding assault or abuse by a health professional, your therapist is required to report it to their regulatory college or authorities.

4. **Court Orders**: If a court orders your clinical records or requires your therapist to testify, they must comply. Your therapist will make every effort to discuss this with you beforehand.

Additionally, your therapist may participate in professional supervision and may discuss cases for support and guidance. In these discussions, your identity and any identifying details will remain confidential.

Your trust is essential, and we are committed to maintaining your confidentiality within these limits.

**Continuity Policy and Discharge Planning**

At Calming Tree Counselling, we believe in providing seamless support for your mental health journey. Our Continuity Policy ensures that your care remains organized and effective, even if there’s a gap in your sessions.

**Discharge Process**

As of Fall 2024, if you have not booked or attended a counselling session within the last six months, you will receive an email discharge letter. This letter will inform you that your file has been closed and will include:

• Confirmation of file closure.

• Instructions for reestablishing appointments with your counsellor, which may involve joining a waitlist and potentially completing a new intake form.

Next Steps

If your counsellor is unable to accommodate new appointments, we may recommend exploring the services of another counsellor within Calming Tree Counselling and Wellness. Our goal is to ensure you continue to receive the support you need.

If you have any questions about our continuity policy or the discharge process, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Your mental health and well-being are our top priorities!
