Meet Hilary McCulloch
Registered Psychotherapist
Hi there! My name is Hilary and I am a Registered Psychotherapist. Starting your therapy journey can be both an overwhelming and rewarding process, and I’m so glad you’ve found your way here.
When meeting with clients, my primary goal is to ensure that they feel seen and heard in their most vulnerable moments. While I am the professional in this setting, I believe clients are the expert in their own lives and often know what is most needed in therapy. This is where my job comes in as the helper to guide you in identifying your own strengths and resiliency, while supporting you with warmth, acceptance, and empathy.
I recognize the complexity of mental health and how the experience of it can differ for each client. Considering this, I use a variety of therapeutic approaches as it allows me to tailor treatment to your individual needs. One of my favourite approaches to use is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) because of its versatility being incorporated into clients’ daily lives. It is all about recognizing that life comes with highs and lows, and it teaches clients how to accept the lows and navigate them in effective ways. It also introduces the idea that a thought is just a thought, not a fact or truth. Some of the other approaches that I like to draw from include Person-Centred Therapy, Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), Mindfulness, and Cognitive-based approaches. I also value practicing from an intersectional, anti-oppressive, and holistic lens to ensure that clients feel safe, respected, and understood.
I work with individuals who present with trauma, anxiety, depression, self-harming behaviours, relationship problems, as well as general stress and difficult life transitions. Regardless of the presenting concerns, my primary goal in providing psychotherapy is to meet each client where they are at and work collaboratively with them to accomplish their therapeutic goals. Currently, I am welcoming new clients who are 18 years of age and older.
A little bit about me academically:
I am registered and in good standing with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) and I obtained my Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University. Prior to this, I attended Queen’s University where I earned my Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biopsychology. As part of my Master’s degree, I also had the opportunity to complete an educational practicum at Cambridge Memorial Hospital where I provided individual and group therapy to adult clients in the outpatient mental health clinic.
